Unmoved mover

unmoved mover

Think of the stars, thunder, forests, birds, and mountains. They are caused by gravity, cosmic gases, electricity, seeds, soil, natural selection, and plate tectonics. Indeed, each of those causes has a cause. And also those causes. But reason tells everyone that there is an uncaused cause of all things.

Let’s say that you observe movements and not causes. You also see the stars, thunder, forests, birds, and mountains. However, you see them as the movement of cosmic elements, electrons, nitrogen and oxygen, male and female, and the sea floor. Indeed, each of those movements is the result of another action. And also those actions. But reason tells everyone that there is an unmoved mover of all things.

The ‘uncaused cause’ and ‘unmoved mover’ we have always called God.

The world, and man, attest that they contain within themselves neither their first principle nor their final end, but rather that they participate in Being itself, which alone is without origin or end. Thus, in different ways, man can come to know that there exists a reality which is the first cause and final end of all things, a reality “that everyone calls ‘God.’

Catechism, 34

Creation tells us something about him. That’s why Paul boldly wrote to the Romans, “Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made. As a result, they have no excuse for although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened. (Rom 1:20-22).”

Even had he not revealed himself, his creation would have still moved us to pray to him for good harvests, rain, fine weather, and the end of storms.

For many of us, surrounded by the greatness of Creation, our soul cries out to God, and we sing.
