The human soul

human soul

The creatures with holes in their souls

Imagine a planet with creatures that only eat plants. They can’t see, and their skin has no feeling. Their souls are visible in very bright light.

Their planet has a sun that feeds the plants through photosynthesis. They have souls with the power of reason, but it fails to give them knowledge about the sun because they cannot see it, feel its heat, or observe any of its effects.

They think that plants grow only from the minerals in the soil. They call it minerasynthesis. They’re also wrong about the cause of weather and every other sun-related phenomenon.

One day, the sun visits them. They become friends and exchange knowledge. They tell him about minerasynthesis. He explains photosynthesis. Each is confused by the other.

He realizes that they are unconscious of his existence. He tells them he is hot and bright, nourishes their plants, and causes their weather.

They flatly reject that there is a sun and that he is it. He tries to persuade them until he sees a hole in their souls. It’s where the power of faith would be. They cannot evidence what they cannot see, observe, or sense in any way.

Their rejection is not rude or impolite. They don’t mean to give the Sun offense. They are creatures without faith who cannot believe the proper knowledge he offers them.

Our living but unseen God infused faith into the human soul because it gives us the power to believe him.

“As the deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God. (Ps 42:2)” O God, the Father of every gift, we confess that all we have and are comes down from you; teach us to recognize the effects of your boundless care and to love you with a sincere heart and with all our strength. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.
