Evangelization

by | Jan 18, 2023 | Catechesis, Catholic faith

Evangelization

Evangelization proclaims that God has fulfilled his promises from Abraham:

“’But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.’ This is ‘the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God’: God has visited his people. He has fulfilled the promise he made to Abraham and his descendants. He acted far beyond all expectation – he has sent his own ‘beloved Son’.”

Catechism, 422

Catechesis reveals that Jesus Christ is indeed the fulfillment of God’s promises and the fullness of God’s revelation to man. It seeks to understand the words and deeds of Jesus and the meaning of the signs that he worked. It literally puts people in touch with his body through the celebration of the sacraments in the Church.

Catechesis is incomprehensible without evangelization. Jesus must be proclaimed to see what he reveals, to hear his words and deeds, and to consider his salvation. Evangelization is incomprehensible without catechesis. To receive the proclamation of the Good News, we must know of God’s revelation, Jesus’ words and deeds and signs, and the Church and the sacraments.

Evangelization and catechesis are lifelong tasks because Christ’s formation inside us is ongoing, and our perfection of charity has no limit.

Evangelize!

And catechize!

Until the day we die!

That is what this Collect is praying for during the Mass for the New Evangelization:

O God, who in the power of the Holy Spirit have sent your Word to announce good news to the poor, grant that, with eyes fixed upon him, we may ever live in sincere charity, made heralds and witnesses of his Gospel in all the world. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
