A misconception is that angels are not real. In fact, the holy angels surround and praise God, surround and serve Christ, and protect every human being.
The Fourth Lateran Council refers to the angels when it explains the creation of man: “God who by his almighty power at the beginning of time created from nothing both spiritual and corporeal creatures, that is to say angelic and earthly, and then created human beings composed as it were of both spirit and body in common.”
That Council taught as the Church prays in the Collect and the Preface of the Angels from the votive Mass of the Holy Angels. Those prayers may also be combined to make a fine Catholic guardian angel prayer:
O God, who dispose in marvelous order ministries both angelic and human, graciously grant that our life on earth may be defended by those who watch over us as they minister perpetually to you in heaven… for the honor we pay the angelic creatures in whom you delight redounds to your own surpassing glory, and by their great dignity and splendor you show how infinitely great you are, to be exalted above all things, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
